What R-Value Does Houston Recommend?
The U.S. Department of Energy places Houston in Climate Zone 2, which calls for attic insulation with an R-value between R-38 and R-60. Most industry experts and local contractors, including us, recommend shooting for R-49 to R-60 for maximum efficiency in Greater Houston.

Why Houston Needs More Insulation Than You Think
A lot of homeowners assume that because Houston winters are mild, they do not need as much attic insulation as homes up north. This is actually backwards. The real enemy in Houston is summer heat gain, and it is relentless.
On a sunny July afternoon, your attic can reach temperatures of 140 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. That enormous heat reservoir radiates down through your ceiling all day and into the evening, forcing your air conditioner to work constantly just to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
A thick layer of high R-value insulation acts as a thermal barrier that slows that heat transfer dramatically. The difference between R-19 and R-49 is not subtle. Homeowners who upgrade from old, settled insulation to a proper R-value often describe it as feeling like they got a brand new air conditioner.
How to Check Your Current R-Value
You can get a rough estimate yourself by measuring the depth of your existing attic insulation. Fiberglass batt insulation provides roughly R-3 per inch and blown-in cellulose provides about R-3.5 per inch. So six inches of blown-in cellulose gives you around R-21, which is significantly below what Houston needs. Does More Always Mean Better?
Up to a point, yes. There are diminishing returns beyond R-60 in Houston's climate, so going to R-80 or beyond is generally not worth the extra cost. The sweet spot for most Houston homes is R-49 to R-60, which delivers excellent performance without unnecessary expense.
The other thing to understand is that insulation alone is not the whole story. Air sealing matters just as much. A thick layer of insulation with gaps and holes underneath it will perform far worse than a slightly thinner layer that is properly air sealed.
